Bibliotheken Online
Bibliotheken Online - The Information Portal for Public Libraries
The project "Bibliotheken Online" is being sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (bm:ukk Abt. IV/4) and managed and carried out by Büchereiverband Österreichs. Thus, public libraries are invited to join a common network and make a common appearance. The collections of Austria\'s public libraries are united and may be searched via a central catalogue. Presently, about 660 libraries take part in Bibliotheken Online, the ultimate goal is the creation of a network of more than 1,000 libraries.

Bibliotheken Online offers:
  • a network of all Austrian public libraries in the world wide web
  • an online-catalogue for all participants: catalogues and other services of single libraries are thus available for everybody on the internet
  • simple search - via one search mask it is possible to search
    - all Austrian public libraries
    - libraries of a certain region
    - a single library
  • service for librarians - vocational information via the internet
  • service for other interested persons that would like to search from home
  • identification of location of all kinds of literature
Due to a programme sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Büchereiverband Österreichs is able to equip libraries with inexpensive library software. The digitalised data may then be used for Bibliotheken Online.

To further the networking of public libraries, the BVÖ supports libraries with:
  • library software
  • e-mail-addresses free of charge
  • a library website
  • webspace free of charge
  • provision of training courses free of charge

Projected development of Bibliotheken Online
Of course, Bibliotheken Online has been designed to expand. The first steps towards an information portal for everyone who is interested in literature have been taken. In the future we intend to add:
  • catalogue entry service via internet
  • book reviews
  • reading samples
  • information on authors
  • addition of audio-visual data
Praise for Bibliotheken Online by the European Union
The European Commission commissioned a study to investigate online services by the public administrations of the EU-15 as well as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. In comparison with similar services Bibliotheken Online was recommended as exemplary.
